Liverpool target Timo Werner scored a hat-trick at the worst possible time.

RB Leipzig beat Mainz 5-0 as the second round of Bundesliga fixtures after the restart were played out.

And Timo Werner showed why the clamour for Liverpool to seal the deal has reached fever pitch over the last few weeks with three goals.

But for a club who are trying to concentrate on winning the Premier League for the first time, and the top division for the first time in 30 years, it comes at the worst possible time.

We’ve seen social media scrutiny of a possible deal nearly every day, with wide ranging sources pitching in with their opinion, claim and counter-claim.

There’s definitely an interest from the club in bringing the German to Anfield, but at things stand it’s hard to see them splashing the cash when revenue is so dramatically down.

Keeping things quiet after the initial burst of speculation may have been the name of the game, but it’ll be almost impossible now that Werner has made his mark on the Bundesliga yet again.

With 24 goals in the league, the Leipzig star is three behind superstar Robert Lewandowski and has consistently proven his capacity for hitting the back of the net on a regular basis.

That’s one of the qualities that makes the clamour for his signature grow louder and louder, but another reason could be the lack of exciting transfer rumours driving the thirst for daily news.

Liverpool have kept it fairly quiet over the last few years and don’t often indulge in wild goose chases for the biggest and brightest talent around Europe.

There are definitely those among the fanbase who are sick of the constant rumours linking Werner with the club, but the prowess he displayed against Mainz ensures that constant chatter will get worse and worse.
