Liverpool starlet Harvey Elliott has rattled cages.

It came as a fairly interesting line in a piece about his past and his future, which has been taking and twisted beyond it’s original intent.

James Pearce wrote an article on Harvey Elliott for The Athletic, and shared the snippet of his meeting with Real Madrid on Twitter.

He said that Elliott was offered the chance to meet Sergio Ramos when he was on a tour of Real Madrid and turned it down – and went on to clarify that a meeting with Ramos wasn’t set up, the youngster was simply offered the chance to meet him.

Social media being what it is, those quotes were ran with and it invited a deluge of criticism of the youngster, the club and the journalist.

Criticism of the journalist is the easiest route to take, but it’s also the laziest. To claim that a writer of Pearce’s quality would make up quotes isn’t even worth thinking about.

But the Twitter mob aren’t having any of it and have been completed riled up for some unimaginable reason. Elliot was being chased by a number of top clubs and could have his pick, but he is also a genuine Liverpool fan.

He was at the Champions League final in which Ramos dislocated Mohamed Salah‘s shoulder and ruled him out of the rest of the game, an injury that would go on to cost Jurgen Klopp’s side in the long run.

All of that context doesn’t seem to matter to the social media mob, who were very quick to start moralising over the story. It didn’t really seem to bother them that they’d been fretting over the actions of a 16-year-old boy.

Liverpool are going to return to our screens this month and with that, hopefully, will be some more minutes for Elliott.
