Has Timo Werner to Liverpool been confirmed by accident?

Transfer deals often involve chains of players and clubs and Liverpool are not immune to this. Buyer A needs Seller A to complete a deal with Seller C before the Buyer A can land their man, and news breaking about the club’s intention could have confirmed the Werner deal by mistake.

Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a move for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly for a while now, that is not fresh information. It’s a deal that would complete one of the best defences in Europe and make scoring goals past goalkeeper Alisson a truly frightening prospect.

However, finances are going to be an issue.

A lack of match revenue has hit wallets hard – although not as hard as it has hit those at the bottom of the football pyramid. The TV broadcasters are also demanding a rebate, which will impact clubs spending power.

The excesses of the past will be soon be no more, and teams are trying to find different ways to get the same transfers done.

One of the likely methods will be through swap deals, which is exactly what was proposed in the case of Koulibaly.

Rather than Dejan Lovren making way for the Senegal international, Divock Origi could be the one asked to swap Merseyside for Naples.

If Origi leaves, it will open the door to another forward being brought in. Surely Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards won’t allow Liverpool to go into the next campaign looking so light up top, even if Rhian Brewster is around the first team.

You can bet that they’ll look the market for one of their long-term targets: Werner. And so, the chain of players develops and we can begin to see how a move for the German striker might unfold.

If the Origi/Koulibaly swap deal has any truth in it, we could have just seen the accidental confirmation of Werner to Liverpool.
