Big twist in the Timo Werner transfer saga
Liverpool face a Timo Werner twist.
According to Leipzig journalist Guido Schäfer, Liverpool could sign Timo Werner after all.
Schäfer was a guest on the Blood Red podcast, reported by Matt Addison in the Echo, and explained how Jurgen Klopp might have the last laugh in the end.
It looks like Chelsea are going to land Werner, but that might not be his final destination. Instead, the German could use the Blues as a stepping stone, gain valuable Premier League experience then leave for a proper club.
Liverpool, explained Schäfer, might be the final destination the striker has in mind.
"He said: “Two years at Chelsea and then it is possible to make the next step – this now is the right step for his career but when he brings a good performance then he can make the next step to a world-class club like Liverpool, Real Madrid or Barca.“I’m sure it’s not the last club for Werner but he might reach a title with Chelsea.”More from Rush The KopSet to return, Virgil Van Dijk facing heavy criticism back homeLiverpool making late comebacks all the rage once againWolves tilt gives Klopp opportunity to tinker with lineup following international dutyPlayers to watch in the matchup with WolvesPredicting Liverpool’s Next Five Premier League Fixtures"
Jurgen Klopp decided to pass on Werner for now because money is a little bit tight, but it’s not always going to be this way.
Within the next few years, the financial situation will probably improve enough to allow the Reds another big summer – and they’ll certainly be able to sell some of their fringe players for maximum value.
There are two aspects to this depreciated market and they both impact each other: clubs are less willing to risk paying big money for someone when they don’t know what the future will bring, and values are dropping which means sides won’t get a good price for anyone they’re trying to sell.
For Liverpool, that means players like Xherdan Shaqiri or Marko Grujic or Harry Wilson could stay on. That’ll bloat the squad and mean less game time for everyone.
It’s not an ideal situation.
And so, according to Schäfer, we could find ourselves in this situation in a couple of summers.
By then Liverpool will have sold their fringe players for good value and will be able to make waves across the transfer market.
By then Timo Werner will be ready for a move to a club that is going to take him into an elite bracket. Don’t give up hope let, this is just us playing the long game.
