Liverpool 0-4 Man City player ratings: Gomez awful, Robertson a headless chicken
Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson were awful as Liverpool lost to Man City.
The two defenders roamed about like headless chickens as Liverpool’s bright start faded quickly and City quickly look control.
It was an excellent start to the game for the neutral as City and Liverpool exchanged attacks, even if the Reds looked brighter as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s movement caused problems.
However, problems were never far away as the midfield seemed to be playing really high up the field as Liverpool looked to apply pressure on City straight away.
Rather than being a cagy, closed affair it was open and entertaining as both sets of forward tried to get in behind.
After the bright start, Liverpool went behind when Joe Gomez conceded a stupid penalty after wrestling Raheem Sterling in the box.
They went behind but didn’t let them dampen their spirit as they continued to attack City with the swagger of a side who had just been crowned Premier League champions.
That came with negatives, too. As they pushed forward in search of a goal, Liverpool left themselves horribly open at the back and Phil Foden made sure Raheem Sterling punished that with the second.
Provider turned scorer as Foden drew Andy Robertson well out of place, slipped behind him and finished well.
The second half didn’t start any better either, as City ran the roost. Jurgen Klopp send on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Gomez as Fabinho dropped into the defence, but then Oxlade-Chamberlain dived to block a Sterling shot and turned it into his own net.
And just before the game ended, Riyad Mahrez had a goal disallowed for a handball in the build up, but in truth they deserved it.
This was an awful, disjointed performance from the Champions. Let’s move on to the player ratings.
Keeper
As expected, Alisson had a lot more to do and showed some nifty footwork early in the game when he cleared under pressure.
The Brazilian wasn’t at fault for any of the goals and was probably one of the better players on the pitch.
