Liverpool lost 4-0 to Manchester City.

A result which fans’ across the world simultaneously found difficult to believe, yet understandable after the club were crowned champions a week earlier.

Although the Reds looked bright in the first 20 minutes, it was in this period they would peak. Mohamed Salah struck the post from a driven shot, and threatened on several occasions in behind.

Sadio Mane had chances in the first and second half, but failed to convert as Liverpool were picked apart on the counter by a superior City side.

As soon as Joe Gomez clumsily tumbled Raheem Sterling to the turf, the Reds seemed to switch off. Massive gaps started to open up between the defence and midfield as the Reds started to chase the game.

Kevin de Bruyne netted comfortably from the spot, with Sterling, Phil Foden and unfortunately Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain adding salt to Liverpool’s wounds.

In attempt to shed some light on clearly a dark day in Liverpool’s wonderful season, I will attempt to find five positives from the performance.

Jurgen Klopp claimed that he was happy with the effort the players put in, although he could have been watching a different game to everyone else. The German isn’t a good loser and wouldn’t have been pleased with what he saw on the field, hopefully it won’t translate to the rest of the season.

The players can have some excuse for letting their foot off the gas, and there are some fans who feel the same way, even if they blew a prime opportunity to stamp their authority over the rest of the league now.
