Defense

. . . Trent Alexander-Arnold. 6

At times Trent Alexander-Arnold looked world class during this match – especially when he found Andy Robertson with those trademark crossfield balls.

But in truth, the end product produced by the Scouser was next to none, which is quite unlike him as he trails only Kevin de Bruyne in assists this season.

His defensive abilities were questionable at times too, but with a Brazilian rock in goal behind him, he was able to get away with it.

. . Virgil van Dijk. 7.

As per for the big Dutchman.

Virgil never quite ceases to amaze with not only his consistency of performance, but how he makes the game of football so simple.

His atoned for his one and only error (being dispossessed by Jack Grealish on the halfway line) and bossed the game after that.

. . Joe Gomez. 6.

An improvement on Thursday night was almost a guarantee for Gomez – and he was solid enough considering the knock to his confidence it could have had.

He gave the ball away when trying to pick out the fullbacks a few times, kicking it out for a Villa throw, but he did all the defensive fundamentals well.

Let’s hope to see our young defensive powerhouse back to his best before the end of the season.

. . . Andy Robertson. 4

Probably the worst player on the pitch, this week hasn’t been the greatest for the Scot.

As he consistently found himself with space to roam into, his clear one-footedness was his downfall as Villa allowed him to have the ball, cut inside and not penetrate like his usual self.

Unless Robbo has still been on the whiskey since last week, he has to come up with a solid excuse as to why his performances have been so Sunday league.

I’m sure we will see his return to form soon, but it does leave a potential weakness in a sometimes unpenetrable backline.
