Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Alisson made mistakes.

Yup, that’s really the headline.

The two most dependable Liverpool players in the squad contributed to Arsenal scoring twice in the first half on Wednesday night as Twitter has exploded.

Virgil van Dijk passing the ball straight to Alexandre Lacazette was bad enough. The Dutchman did his best Harry Maguire impression and delivered the most uncharacteristic of errors to let the Gunners equalise, before Alisson went one better.

The Brazilian goalkeeper passed a throw-in straight to an Arsenal shirt, before Reiss Nelson was played in for his first Premier League strike.

All that undid the good work of Roberto Firmino, Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane. Firmino played Robertson in down the left, before the left-back found Mane on the edge of the six-yard box for a regulation goal.

It all seemed pretty easy at Liverpool received their guard of honour before the game and started like a side who’d just walked the Premier League.

But they ended it like someone scrapping near the bottom and Twitter was quick to jump on the two howlers from previously unflappable squad members.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp looked a little baffled as the half-time whistle blew, and it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall of the dressing room.

No doubt they’ll come out all guns blazing, but the forwards will now have to do twice as much work to undo the blunders their defensive colleagues made.

To see one mistake is forgivable, especially when the league has already been won. But to see two, especially from the titans of van Dijk and Alisson, is especially strange.

Let’s see what happens in the second half, but you can bet there won’t be anything like that again as van Dijk and the goalkeeper will be desperate to put things right.
