A precedent Liverpool set with Alisson is driving the Thiago deal.

Kate McGreavy for the Mail Online wrote that sources in Germany have claimed Liverpool and Thiago have agreed personal terms on a move.

If it goes through, there will be strong shades with the example the club set when they moved for AS Roma stopper Alisson.

Jurgen Klopp does place his faith in his existing squad, but once he feels someone can be replaced he moves quickly.

We initially began seeing links between Thiago and Liverpool in the aftermath of the Manchester City humbling. The game was supposed to be about turning up at the Etihad and showing the deposed Champions why Liverpool were so great, but Pep Guardiola turned the tables on Klopp.

In that game, the midfield were poor and it really highlighted some of the gaps that exist within the current squad.

We can safely assume that Klopp was not happy with how things went. We can also assume he decided to act based on that one moment.

We can safely assume this because we’ve seen it before. We saw a poor midfield performance against Atletico Madrid, Watford and West Ham. The writing has been on the wall.

For Loris Karius, it wasn’t just on the wall. It was on the floor, the ceiling and everywhere else you looked. His performance in the Champions League final against Real Madrid might have been concussion induced, but Karius never recovered his old confidence.

Klopp still placed his trust in the German goalkeeper, until a howler in preseason made him change his mind.

Quick as a flash Alisson was brought in and he has transformed the team.

Could we be saying the same about Thiago in a couple of years’ time, and if we do will we look back at the precedent Klopp set with Alisson as the moment that made it all possible?
