Liverpool player ratings – defence

8. . . . Trent Alexander-Arnold

You can’t stop this lad. He’s tremendous from set-pieces and scored his second direct free-kick since the restart with a curler from well outside the area.

Alexander-Arnold then provided Firmino with his first home goal this season with a wicked delivery towards the six-yard box.

He did need some help towards the end, which Oxlade-Chamberlain provided, but all round this was a solid effort from the youngster.

6. . . . Joe Gomez

Chelsea looked to press Gomez all night but his quick feet and quick wit meant they couldn’t really get near him.

However, he was part of the trio of players who were bamboozled by Pulisic for the second goal, and it got worse for the third as Gomez and van Dijk contributed to the most Benny Hill moment of the season to let Pulisic in for the third.

That was a pretty Sunday league error to make, and it colours and otherwise solid performance from the England international.

. . Virgil van Dijk. 6.

Van Dijk didn’t have much to do, but when he was called upon he did reasonably well. Virgil helped to spring a few successful offside traps and his passing from the back was excellent.

Could he have done more to cut off Pulisic’s ball to Abraham for the second goal? He certainly could have for the American’s goal as van Dijk and Gomez clashed with it each other, fell in a heap and allowed Chelsea in behind.

Mixed.

7. . . . Andy Robertson

Looked to be back to his energetic best and he roamed down the left in support of attacks. His assist for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal was the result of his supreme fitness and crossing ability, while his defending was at a high level.
