Jamal Lewis is desperate for a Liverpool move.
News broke yesterday that sporting director Michael Edwards and manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to put a bid in for the Norwich City player, and more updates have come today.
James Ayles for MailOnline has read The Athletic and reported that Jamal Lewis is ‘desperate’ for a Liverpool move. Whether this helps get the deal over the line is yet to be seen, especially with Edwards playing hardball over the fee.
Liverpool only want to spend £10 million on the left-back, said the report, but the Canaries value him at double that.
He’s only got one year left on his current contract and played 28 games last season, where he was impressive even as Norwich shipped goals and were relegated.
Norwich don’t want to sell any of their promising players for less than £20 million – the fee they got for James Maddison when he joined Leicester City. MailOnline wrote that they see that amount as the benchmark when it comes to letting go of their starlets and don’t want to deviate from that.
Who knows if this transfer will get done, but Liverpool’s clear interest and Lewis’s desire to join Klopp on Merseyside are both promising. Edwards’ opening offer may be far away from what Norwich want, but we’ve seen the transfer team are expert negotiators and anything could happen from here.
With Dejan Lovren sold to Zenit St. Petersberg for £10 million, there is some money in the bank. The club also removed Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne from the wage bill, which provides some wiggle room.
This would be a good move for Liverpool. Lewis is still young, appears willing to be a back-up to Robertson, is British and can improve.
Who knows if he’ll stay and become a first team regular, but he’s worth taking a chance on.
