£20 million Northern Ireland international Jamal Lewis wants Liverpool.

Liverpool and Norwich City’s valuation of the left-back is pretty far apart, but that hasn’t dampened the desire of the 22-year-old to complete the move.

According to the Paisley Gates, who quotes James Pearce’s article in The Athletic, Jamal Lewis is prepared to come into the side as Andy Robertson’s back-up and is desperate for the move to go ahead.

As we’ve reported before, sporting director Michael Edwards put in an initial offer of £10 million, but as this appears to be the club’s top transfer target you can safely assume that Liverpool are happy to go higher.

Once this scouting department settles on who they feel is the ideal candidate for a role, they vary rarely deviate from that. It can create drawn out sagas, like the ones we saw for Virgil van Dijk or Alisson Becker, but it also means Liverpool hardly every miss the mark when it comes to signings.

Owners FSG have spent wisely since taking over the club, and this business for Jamal Lewis could become another one of their bargain finds.

Smarter Scout illustrated how similar Robertson was during his last season with Hull City to Lewis’s completed 2019/2020 campaign. It’s easy to think of the Scot as a world-class player now, which he is, but the defender initially struggled to find minutes under Klopp and only came into his own half-way through his debut campaign.

Lewis will probably have a longer adaptation period and won’t be required to play that often, certainly not while Robbo is fit, but the similarities between the two are encouraging.

If Klopp can realise Robertson-esque improvements in the Norwich starlet, then this deal will be pay for itself in a few years.

Let’s hope Lewis’s determination to get this one done can work in our favour, as he begs the Norwich board to accept the offer.
