Bernardo Silva has been hammered for his Liverpool attack.

The Manchester City star took to Twitter to launch an extraordinary rant at Reds’ fans who have been calling him out following their loss to Lyon in the Champions League.

While the defeat to the Ligue 1 side can be classed as a surprise, the biggest surprise was what Bernardo Silva did next.

It hasn’t gone down too well across Twitter – who were quick to remind the Portuguese international about some of his unsavoury moments.

There was celebrating Mohamed Salah getting injured in the Champions League final against Real Madrid and the refusal to clap Liverpool onto the pitch during the guard of honour. This man, out of anyone, should know about the warm embrace of schadenfreude.

Whether we like it or not, it’s basically what drives football and it’s definitely what drives it across social media in this generation. For Silva to hit out against that when he’s displayed similar behaviour in the past shows a excruciating lack of self-awareness.

In some respects, his behaviour is to be admired. At least this isn’t a man who’ll wilt into the background and you have to respect anyone who is willing to stick their head up above the parapet and say what they think – especially to an unlimited and unfiltered audience.

It doesn’t excuse or change the result of his actions, however, and the attacks coming his way broadly make some very salient points.

Silva is a little genius on the field and will be hurting because of the Champions League exit. He wasn’t trusted to start, which’ll hurt a little more, and is part of this lavish squad that continues to fail in their ultimate goal.

That’ll hurt the most, even more than a few Liverpool fans gloating over their exit on social media.
