Liverpool have set their sights on Bournemouth forward David Brooks.

Sky Sports have reported that Jurgen Klopp wants to bring in the Cherries man, but will face competition to do so from Manchester United.

The Welsh international had a breakout 2018/19 season for the south coast club, scoring seven goals and notching up five assists.

However, a long term ankle injury scuppered his progress and despite returning to the side after the COVID-19 lockdown he was unable to save Eddie Howe’s team from relegation.

There is no secret that Klopp has been looking around for players that can act as quality cover for his front three. Bournemouth will also be looking to offload some players and bring in some cash as they prepare for life in the second tier of English football.

Liverpool aren’t the only side who want to bring in David Brooks. The report mentioned Man United, Leicester, Tottenham and Everton are all keen – but with a reported asking price of £40 million you have to question the validity of this story.

Liverpool were reluctant to stump up similar money for Timo Werner, and there still seems to be issues surrounding the very reasonable asking price for world-class midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Add the positive preseason form of Rhian Brewster into the mix and you might have to call bull on the reporters at Sky Sports.

Of course, there is every chance that Liverpool have been keeping an eye on Brooks’ development. At 23 he still has a lot of room for improvement and the numbers being thrown around may be from Bournemouth themselves as they try and squeeze as much money as they can from a transfer.

But Liverpool aren’t mugs when it comes to shopping in the transfer market and will not pay a penny more than they feel a player is worth, just ask Norwich City and Jamal Lewis.

For me, this is a nonstarter and once the Thiago deal is done that will be the end of our current transfer business.
