Liverpool have been warned off Kristoffer Ajer.

The Celtic defender was part of the team that lost 2-1 to Hungarian side Ferencvárosi TC as they crashed out the Champions League in the qualifying round.

Bhoys’ fans were unhappy about the 22-year-old’s performances and are beginning to lose patience with the Norwegian international.

Earlier in the week he was linked with a move to Liverpool and it would seem like the defender has what it takes to make the jump to a Premier League level.

Kristoffer Ajer was another one of those wonderkids from Norway who broke through when he was barely a teenager and earned a move abroad on the back of that. He’s only 22 but he made his debut for Start six years ago, and captained the side when he was just 16.

He even scored 14 goals for the side, and that saw Celtic swoop for the starlet. Ajer hasn’t always progressed as smoothly as was anticipated but he’s a first team regular now and usually played as a central defender.

The Norwegian has come under fire for his level of performances this season, and especially after the Ferencvárosi game, when fans of the Glasgow side expressed their disappointment and anger via Twitter.

After spending £9.45 million this summer and missing out on the Champions League money, there was a feeling among the supporters that player sales would be needed. Ajer and Odsonne Edouard would be two players who Celtic boss Neil Lennon could consider letting go.

Despite his shaky start to the season, Ajer could still be a fine buy for Liverpool. He’s young, already comes with leadership experience, is good on the ball and would be able to fit in across a number of positions.

Jurgen Klopp could also groom him with a view to replacing Joel Matip when he moves on and show him a clear path to the first team.
