After losing the league title to Arsenal in the very last day, Liverpool had a chance to avenge that defeat as they would take on the Gunners in the Community Shield. The Reds qualified by winning the FA Cup, beating Everton 3-2.

Liverpool who were managed by Dalglish, had a very good chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute but Ian Rush’s header from John Barnes’ free-kick hit the post. The Reds, however, went on to take the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to Peter Beardsley who beat goalie John Lukic after receiving a long ball from Barry Venison.

Arsenal had a chance to equalise before half-time but Kevin Richardson’s left-footed shot went over the crossbar.

In the second-half, Beardsley had a chance to put Liverpool ahead but his shot was saved by Lukic. In the end, the Reds managed to hold on to their lead and retain the Community Shield, winning the competition for the 12th time.
