2002

Liverpool qualified for the 2002 Community Shield by finishing second in the Premier League as Arsenal won the title as well as the FA Cup.

The Reds were the reigning champions but Arsene Wenger’s side seemed the favorites to win. Liverpool did not have the best of starts as Steven Gerrard was almost sent off after his tackles on Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry within a few minutes, being booked for the former.

The Gunners tried hard to open the scoring and in the end, it took a few saves from Jerzy Dudek to deny Henry and Dennis Bergkamp within 8-10 seconds.

Arsenal came very close to opening the scoring with less than two minutes to go in the second half but Henry’s shot but the Polish goalkeeper deflected his shot onto the post. Dudek made a few more saves in the next few minutes from the French striker and his compatriot Sylvain Wiltord.

Arsenal eventually opened the scoring in the 69th minute after substitute Gilberto Silva who won the World Cup six weeks ago, cashed in on a pass from Bergkamp and found the net. The Gunners did enough to hold on to their lead and won their 11th Community Shield.
