Liverpool will only spend £30 million this transfer window.

Fans have been calling for investment in the squad for a couple of years but so far Fenway Sports Group have been resistant.

They made just one senior signing for 2019/2020 and that was for Adrian, a reserve goalkeeper, while Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg came in to supplement U23 ranks.

Even though both made first team appearances last season, they were certainly purchased with an eye on the future.

Andy Lonergan was also brought in, but his was the third-choice goalkeeper and didn’t make an appearances during his one-year stint at Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with Thiago this season, and Argentine source Ole, via Paisley Gates, said that it’ll be on only deal they do.

That would mean FSG are only prepared to spend £30 million more, even though the squad needs another senior central defender.

The sight of Fabinho dropping back to play in defence isn’t an easy one to see. He’s one of the best holding midfielders in the league and removing him from that position is criminal, even if the Brazilian could play there.

We’re basically waiting for FSG to whip out their chequebook, get on the phone to Bayern Munich and make sure the deal for Thiago can be done.

He wants to move, Munich want him to move and Jurgen Klopp wants the player through the door. The only thing that’s holding this up is the money, and that can be frustrating.

£30 million for an elite midfielder is a bargain, all things considered, and he would definitely add something a little bit extra to the squad.

If it comes down to Thiago or a fourth central defender, it’s unsure what position Klopp would move to cover. There are options within the squad, but none of them are as good as Dejan Lovren (as horrifying as that thought may be).
