Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum has given Barcelona the green light.

Spanish publication Sport reported that Barca are in talks with sporting director Michael Edwards about a deal, but won’t pay more than €20 million for the midfielder.

Gini Wijnaldum has told Liverpool that he wants to leave for the Camp Nou, and now it’s up to the two sides to agree terms.

This contradicts what we’ve previously been told about this deal. According to Mark Ogden for ESPN, Wijnaldum isn’t bothered about the move going through, which would have put any transfer for Thiago on ice.

Gini is in the last 12 months of his contract and talks don’t seem to be going anywhere, which lowers the value Liverpool would get for the Dutchman.

Thiago will only be sold for €30 million, said Bayern Munich, and maybe that should set a precedent for elite midfielders in the last year of their deal. However, the Spanish international comes with a little more pedigree than Wijnaldum, which adds more on the top of his fee.

This is a transfer saga that’s threatening to drag on. Swapping Gini for Thiago does make sense, and we all know that manager Jurgen Klopp wants to sign the Munich player. It appears as if Gini is incredibly relaxed about signing a new contract.

Ogden said there were ‘significant differences’ between what Wijnaldum wants and what Liverpool are prepared to offer, so all signs seem to point towards some player movement.

If the Reds can bring in some money for the man they signed in 2016 from Newcastle United for £24.75 million, it’ll represent a really good deal for the bean counters.

Even though Klopp is happy to let players run down their contracts and leave for free, they should listen to Wijnaldum, sell the man for €20 million and bring in Thiago.
