Van Dijk’s moment of madness

The Dutchman is probably the best defender in the world but there are times when he can be disappointing and today was one example. Van Dijk  scored in Liverpool’s Premier League opener in the second season running by heading in their second of the match.

However, roundabout ten minutes later, the 29-year-old’s poor clearance eventually allowed Bamford to score. For a player of his pedigree, Van Dijk should’ve done better.

His goal might see him receiving a less amount of criticism but he needs to be more alert at times. Last season, the Dutchman was to blame for a goal Liverpool conceded against Arsenal and today, he made another error.

Call it sloppiness, call it being laid-back, call it arrogance, errors like these should be avoided by Van Dijk if Liverpool are to prevent their opponents from scoring.

It’s highly out of character for the Dutchman and you wouldn’t normally be too worried about lapses like that – just because of his previous record. But van Dijk has been error prone of late and will want to fix that before Chelsea.

Frank Lampard has signed a whole new attack and everyone will need to be switched on, fighting fit and ready to go.
