Both teams kicked off 2020/2021 with victories and both teams will be looking for improvements when they play each other.
Liverpool beat Leeds but their defending was slack and Virgil van Dijk made another uncharacteristic error. Chelsea defeated Brighton, but it wasn’t as convincing as the 3-1 score suggested.
Blues manager Frank Lampard has splashed the cash and will want to bring Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz into his starting side as quickly as possible, while Jurgen Klopp might opt against giving Thiago his debut.
Havertz could be their weak link, and Rush The Kop man Roy Skillen has suggested that Klopp should target the German.
The Spaniard is available, but joined the club at the end of the week and probably won’t be up to speed yet.
Thiago’s arrival will be a kick for the rest of the midfield. Naby Keita will need to ensure his place in the starting side is secured with a good performance, while Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho will be aware of the Spaniard breathing down their neck.
It’s also an important game for whoever is chosen to partner van Dijk. Joe Gomez didn’t have the best time of it last week, while Joel Matip will want the chance to show what he’s made of. Both of those men may be put under pressure by Ozak Kaban, who has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield.
Liverpool and Chelsea like to attack and this should be a good battle. Mohamed Salah is in fine form already after his three goals against Leeds and will want to add to that tally on Sunday.
