Are we going to finally see Kalidou Koulibaly in a Liverpool shirt?

The transfer window brings with it some rumours that stick. Season go by, titles come and go, but these rumours find a way of cropping up every now and then. Koulibaly to Liverpool has been one such rumour that just doesn’t ever seem to go away.

During the rebuilding process a couple of years back, the Napoli defender was linked to Liverpool to play alongside Virgil Van Dijk. No doubt that this would have created a mouthwatering defensive partnership, one which would have been tough to get past.

However, Liverpool did not sign him as VVD linked up Joe Gomez, which turned out to be a formidable partnership.

We won the Champions League two years back and when the window came, the club were still linked to Koulibaly. With every passing transfer window, the prospect of Koulibaly joining Liverpool came from some media outlet or the other. This time they arise from Le Parisien.

In theory this would be a great signing for sure. Koulibaly would give us depth in the center-half position and an increased threat during set-pieces.

Now, let us also flirt with the idea of the Reds signing Koulibaly. The signing of Thiago, who is aged 29, has shown that the owners are willing to sign a player who can elevate the standard within the squad.

The rumoured price at which he is available is about £64 million. We have been told that Liverpool, in spite of the heroics of Michael Edwards, need to sell players to generate money through player sales. So here goes, let us see if we have the fringe players to sell in order to sign him.

Harry Wilson – £15 million
Marko Grujic – £10 million
Rihan Brewster – £25 million (with a buy back clause)
Loris Karius – £5 million
Nathaniel Phillips – £7 million

That is a total of £62 million that the Reds can generate to sign Koulibaly. In theory this signing seems to be a match made in heaven, but will it become a reality?

The rumour has now turned into a drumbeat, let us and wait to find out!
