Liverpool player ratings: Defenders

. . TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD. 3.5.

You remember when Rashford tore Alexander-Arnold apart at Old Trafford? This was worse.

Everything came down the right-hand side. Every single goal from open play. They destroyed them.

It was like the two had never played together before. We’re not used to seeing such inept footballing from the best players in the world and it was like watching Gareth Bale tear Maicon apart.

2.5. . . . JOE GOMEZ

This Joe Gomez performance echoed Dejan Lovren at Wembley – multiply that by at least two.

Gomez just needed to get off that field at half-time. Or even earlier. It was painful to watch how rash he was.

He needs a spell on the side-lines to be honest. Liverpool need Joel Matip back.

It begs the question, will Klopp turn to the transfer market? The German surely won’t, but this raises the risks he’s taking by using Fabinho as a fourth choice central defender. Gomez has started this season in a very mixed fashion – he’ll be lucky to keep his place for the Everton game.

5. . . . VIRGIL VAN DIJK

Although he wasn’t directly responsible for any of the goals, Virgil van Dijk was responsible for the defensive line which let Liverpool down so much.

As captain and leader he should take some flack – and his record as skipper isn’t to be desired. 7-2 is a freak result, but there’s no way a side like Villa should look so threatening again and again and again. This simply was not good enough.

6. . . . ANDY ROBERTSON

Robertson was the only one of the traditional back four who can be even slightly excused – purely because of his forward exploits in the first half.

Again, none of the goals came on his side – but still, a very disappointing performance from the Scot.
