Shambolic organisation and a horrible high line haunt Liverpool
By Zubin Daver
Liverpool gets a taste of their own medicine and lose to Aston Villa, 7-2.
Liverpool were on the wrong side of a score line with Villa hammering a win against the Champions with a strong performance. Many would argue that Villa were lucky, but in truth be said, luck favours the brave! This is the first time since 1953 that Liverpool conceded seven goals in a football match.
This game did not seem to be one that would push Liverpool too much. Statistically, there was a 67% chance that Liverpool were going to continue their perfect start. However, Aston Villa were the hungrier of the two and deserved the win – even if three goals were the result of deflected shots. Lady Luck truly does favor the brave.
With this win under the belt, Aston Villa and Everton are the only clubs to continue their perfect start to the season, while Liverpool’s start crumbled and burned to ashes.
Many were worried that without Sadio Mane, Liverpool might lack bite. However, Diogo Jota got his full debut in the Premier League and did show that he is here not to just fill up the numbers.
With Alisson Becker out injured, Adrian deputised in goal. He had one of his worst games in a Liverpool jersey. It was he who gifted Villa the lead with a casual misdirected pass to Joe Gomez, who wasn’t expecting the ball.
Adrian really has shown that he might not have what it takes to be Becker’s deputy and this is an issue Jurgen Klopp needs to look at before the transfer window closes.
Ollie Watkins scored a smashing hattrick. He looks a complete player with one easy tap-in, one brilliant finish and one header into an empty net. In the words of the commentator, it certainly was a happy Ollie-day for the Villa fans.
Ross Barkley had a few good chances to score but seemed to left his scoring boots at home and his one goal came via a huge deflection. Jack Grealish joined the party with a couple of goals as well.
There was not much to boast about for Liverpool. Except for the fact that Mohamed Salah scored a brace. He was the one who was fouled by John McGinn with the Villa defender nudging his hip. VAR surprisingly did not overturn the decision. The Reds were certainly robbed off a penalty.
That being said, Liverpool were pulled apart and thoroughly beaten. The Champions were humbled. Klopp will have to go back to the drawing board and use the international break (which comes at the right time) to his advantage to get rid of the fragile defence. This entire season, Liverpool’s defensive organisation shape has not been good throughout.
In all honesty, the fact of the matter is, conceding seven goals shouldn’t be the major cause of concern. However, the lack of defensive organisation and communication coupled with the inability to play a proper high-line should the major things to focus on.
With this humiliating result, Liverpool have to deal with the fact that Everton are top of the table and still unbeaten.
