Liverpool have sent Marko Grujic on loan.

The news comes days after the club said they’d only entertain permanent offers for the Serbian, but they’ve since backtracked on their stance.

Marko Grujic faced a season without any first team football at a crucial stage in his development, but that’s now been resolved.

Grujic is off to Porto on a season-long loan deal, said the official club website, and it appears as if there’s no obligation to buy included in the transfer.

Despite impressing during the Carabao Cup games against Arsenal and Lincoln City, the midfielder had no future at the club. He’s too far behind in the pecking order, and it would take an unimaginable injury crisis before he was called into the Premier League squad.

This is a good move for the player and for Liverpool. Grujic gets to feature in the Champions League and challenge for the Portuguese top flight, while Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have to keep an unhappy player satisfied.

It also makes squad registration a lot easier as it removes one foreigner from the roster, which will mean nobody else should miss out on a place.

Xherdan Shaqiri was another who could have departed, but the Swiss international is more likely to be called up to the first team than Grujic – while Harry Wilson doesn’t really count because he’s homegrown.

If anything, Wilson staying at Liverpool helps them more than it hinders.

After the final deadline day flurry, we failed to see moves secured for these fringe players. Edwards would have been looking at raising a fair packet for them, but will have to wait on that money.

Liverpool now have two weeks to prepare for the Merseyside derby and reset the demons after being beaten 7-2 by Aston Villa. How Klopp responds will be incredibly interesting.
