Liverpool have been tipped to turn to the market.
The transfer deadline for domestic deals passes on Friday and Michael Edwards has been urged to get a deal done.
With Alisson out injured for up to six weeks and confidence in Adrian plummeting, there’s been a fair amount of noise hovering around the internet about a possible replacement.
First it was Stoke City man Jack Butland who was linked with a move to Liverpool, but he’s not even first choice with the Potters and that doesn’t inspire much.
However, Football Insider reported that former Sunderland star Kevin Phillips has backed one other Championship goalkeeper as the man to solve Jurgen Klopp’s problem.
That man is Ben Foster.
"Phillips said: “If I was Jurgen Klopp, I would go for Ben Foster. He was outstanding for Watford last season, even though they went down. Foster is a safe pair of hands, even at his age.”"
The 37-year-old has been playing professional football for nearly 20 years – Stoke signed him from Warwick in 2001 for just £90,000.
Foster has played 364 games in the Premier League and won eight caps for England in a career that’s seen him turn out for Watford, West Brom, Manchester United, Birmingham City, Wrexham and Kidderminster Harriers.
He’s played nearly 500 times professionally and would be a great option to replace Adrian, reckons Phillips.
The striker is the only Englishman to win the European Golden Shoe but only managed to pick up eight England appearances. He’s also had spells coaching at Leicester City, Derby County and Stoke City.
Basically, this is a former attacker who should know a thing or two about what makes goalkeepers good and the qualities they should have to play at the highest level.
Despite these rumours, we’ve heard nothing from Klopp or Liverpool to suggest that they want to get rid of Adrian. He has started to make errors, but was pivotal in the 11 Premier League games he played last season and the club don’t tend to make hasty decisions like this.
After the Aston Villa loss, Klopp backed the ‘keeper – wrote Goal.
"“We didn’t help him tonight. He is a really good goalie. Last year we played 11 games with him and won pretty much all.”"
With Everton up next, it’s of vital importance that the Spaniard is back to his best.
