Liverpool player ratings: Midfielders

. GINI WIJNALDUM. 6. .

Fans of Ajax and Dutch football might be used to seeing Gini Wijnaldum in a more advanced position, but Klopp asked him to sit deeper in the first half of the game.

But Wijnaldum has got the ability to move through the gears and when he did so, Gini progressed play forward very nicely.

Wijnaldum got better after the introduction of Henderson, but still should have done better with his chance in the second half.

5. . . . Curtis Jones

Youngster Curtis Jones was handed a surprise start as Keita was ruled out of the game because of a light injury, and didn’t really get going on his Champions League debut.

Jones only last 45 minutes as he struggled to get into the game and was caught in possession a few times.

. . James Milner. 5.

James Milner was another one who came into the side a bit unexpectedly, but didn’t look fit enough to carry out his usual game.

Is age finally catching up with the bionic man? Some of his touches and passes were pretty sloppy, and despite his usual hard work, Milner couldn’t really pick up the pace of the game.

You’d hope he’ll improve moving forwards, but with starts becoming more rare as he ages, we could be seeing the decline of the great man.
