Liverpool player ratings: Midfielders

Jordan Henderson/GINI WIJNALDUM. 6/6. . .

Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum made the most of the five substitutes allowance by each completing 45 minutes – something Klopp said was the plan all along.

Henderson moved forward well, but then dropped back more after Fabinho limped off the pitch; a role Wijnaldum continued to do after his introduction.

. . . Xherdan Shaqiri. 6

Klopp doesn’t mind pulling a rabbit out of the hat with these Champions League nights and Shaqiri starting was one of those. The Swiss international played in midfield and completed the full 90 minutes.

While he took a bit of time to get going, and you’d expect that, Shaqiri was able to combine with Alexander-Arnold to allow the right-back to set up the first goal and generally attacked well.

One slight downside of his game was his occasional tendency to get caught out of position.

. James Milner. 6. .

There were people fearing that Milner was past it following his Ajax display, but this one had a lot more energy from the bionic man. He’s never going to excite in the way he once did, and Milner played a very functional role here.

The veteran did burst forwards once and had a shot blocked, but that was about the extent of his attacking intent. Milner spent the rest of the game putting in the hard yards and protecting that clean sheet.
