Liverpool fans have been given some massive news.

Sporting director Michael Edwards is brilliant at long-term planning and as a result most of the side are tied to lucrative contracts.

That allows Liverpool to protect the transfer value of their elite stars like Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah, and have a strong idea of what the team will look like in the next two or three years.

Edwards and Jurgen Klopp have allowed a few to slip through the net, most notably Emre Can in the early days of the German’s reign.

Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno have also walked away from Liverpool following the end of their deal, while Gini Wijnaldum could be next.

The Dutchman has failed to sign a new contract and can talk to teams from January. Barcelona were interested in Gini this summer, but that move failed and it seems like he’ll leave for nothing at the end of the season.

However, Guardian writer Fabrizio Romano has given reassuring news about one of Wijnaldum’s teammates.

Fabinho’s contract expires in 2023, said Transfermarkt, but Liverpool aren’t hanging around and want to offer him a new deal.

Speaking to the Here We Go podcast, Romano said that the Reds have been talking to the Brazilian about extending his stay at Anfield beyond the next three years.

"Romano said: “Fabinho wants to extend his contract with Liverpool. He’s so happy for the future of Liverpool; [he has been] talking with [Jurgen] Klopp about what’s going to happen in the future of the club.”"

Fabinho has been a vital part of the side ever since he arrived from Monaco. While Fab normally plays as a defensive midfielder, he’s been drafted in as a centre-back as cover for Virgil van Dijk and immediately looked the part.

By starting talks now, they’ll be able to avoid the same sort of impasse that currently grips the Wijnaldum situation. At 27-years-old, Fabinho will be committing the rest of his elite years to Liverpool if he does sign his new deal.
