Barcelona want to sign Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
The Catalan side want to solve all of their problems by signing one of the most injury prone defenders in the Premier League.
Barca also want to bring in one of the only centre-backs left in the Liverpool squad. I’m not sure that’s a deal that’s going to get over the line.
Nevertheless it has been reported so we’re bringing it to you, even if it’s just to have a decent giggle over a cup of tea while it rains outside.
Spanish outlet Sport have reported that Joel Matip is wanted on loan, as well as Premier League rejects Antonio Rudiger and Shkodran Mustafi.
After Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were struck down by injury, Matip is all that Jurgen Klopp has left in terms of senior centre-backs.
Rush The Kop have questioned whether this latest blow is a sign that Gomez might be out of chances with Klopp, and it would make even less sense for the manager to sanction a central defender’s move away.
Barcelona have already been snooping around Kirkby and were heavily linked with a move for Gini Wijnaldum in the summer.
Wijnaldum appears likely to leave the club on a free transfer. He’ll be able to talk to sides in January and looks set to depart on a free when his contract expires in the summer.
The Dutchman has been so important to Klopp and it seems odd that he’d be allowed to walk away from this project for absolutely nothing – but not as odd as it would be for Matip to be allowed out.
Even if Liverpool sign one or two centre-backs in January, they’ll need an experienced head around them to help these prospective new boys to acclimatise to the Premier League.
Matip to Barca? Worse transfer rumour yet.
