Liverpool player ratings vs Atalanta: Mane anonymous, the end of Origi
Atalanta beat Liverpool in the Champions League.
These are our player ratings as the Reds put in a slow, stilted performance against the Serie A side, and were punished for their lack of adventure.
Josep Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored second-half goals for Atalanta, and while Liverpool sent on their big dogs in search of a goal, it was in vein.
Jurgen Klopp started a much-changed side that included Kostas Tsimikas, Rhys Williams and Divock Origi – but few of those replacements put their hand up for continued first team involvement.
The pace of the game was much slower than Liverpool would have liked, while the visitors dominated possession and territory in the opening stages of the tie.
After Jurgen Klopp was able to say a few words to the squad at half-time, they came out with renewed energy and attacking intent. Neco Williams was often found closer to Atalanta’s box than his own, while Kostas Tsimikas did his best to provide a threat from the left.
Despite this, the passing failed to be as snappy as the team needed or Klopp demanded and the German sent on four substitutes at once: Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and Fabinho.
Ilicic opened the scoring for Atalanta, who had won every game in which they scored first. Immediately after, the manager sent on those four players but it didn’t work as Gosens grabbed the second shortly after as he ghosted behind the Reds defence.
Let’s get into the Liverpool player ratings to see how they all go on.
Goalkeeper: Alisson (7/10)
Alisson snuffed out the main attacking threat of the night as Gosens shot was kept out by the world class goalkeeper. He also showed alertness just after the second half started as he scrambled to gather a dangerous through-ball.
