Liverpool want a Dutch 21-year-old.
The Daily Star, who quote Corriere dello Sport, have reported that Jurgen Klopp is looking to broaden his options in the January transfer window.
It’s been an odd season so far. Important and comprehensive wins and performances, like the 3-0 victory against Leicester, have been followed up by curiously bad results.
Atalanta came to Anfield and left with three points, two goals and one very important win as the Serie A side kept their Champions League hopes alive. The Reds failed to registered a shot on target and looked slow and ponderous throughout.
Liverpool are not a side who want to panic buy or react aggressively to events that fall outside their control. Sporting director Michael Edwards is a calculated man and has his list of prefered targets, regardless of what random incidences change the dynamic of the side.
However, the two critical injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have changed things a little bit. It may well be that the Reds were already looking at Ajax centre-back Perr Schuurs, and have just accelerated their timescale.
According to the Corriere dello Sport, Edwards and Klopp have opened up with a £27 million offer for the Dutchman – which should be enough to secure the deal.
Schuurs has played 12 games for Ajax this season, eight in the Eredivisie and four in the Champions League. Despite his age, the 21-year-old is an experienced player and has already made 93 career appearances.
60 of those came with Fortuna Sittard before Ajax swooped for the starlet in 2018, paying £1.8 million for the defender – said Transfermarkt.
Despite that experience and the trust the Dutch giants have placed in Schuurs, the Netherlands are yet to award him a senior cap. Schuurs has played 11 times for the U21 side, which is only five less than the amount of games he’s played in the Champions League.
