Liverpool fans have praised a ‘world-class’ performance.

The Reds beat Ajax 1-0 to secure their passage to the next round of the Champions League as Curtis Jones scored the only goal of the game.

Neco Williams played well as he assisted the goal after 58 minutes, and in general, he looked fitter, sharper and played with higher levels of confidence and composure.

Elsewhere in Group D, Atalanta drew 1-1 with FC Midtjylland to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side four points clear at the top of the group with just one game left.

Klopp started a fairly strong side but he still made some surprise choices, most notably starting Irish youngster Caoimhin Kelleher ahead of Adrian. Alisson Becker was out with another injury, despite reports that indicated bad news about the Brazilian was wide of the mark.

Neco Williams replaced James Milner at right-back, who had previously replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. Jones featured in midfield as Jordan Henderson rejoined old mate Gini Wijnaldum to complete the three-man engine room.

Roberto Firmino was handed a rest as Diogo Jota came into the side, although the Brazilian was thrown into the action after 30 minutes.

Despite strong performances from a number of the younger players, it was Fabinho who walked away from the game with all the plaudits.

The former Monaco man dropped down into central defence as he partnered Joel Matip. Fabinho swiftly proved that he’s an outstanding footballer who is capable of playing across a number of different position as he put in a ‘world-class’ performance.

Ajax came into this game on a high after putting five past FC Emmen at the weekend. They have an electric, youthful attack that’s complimented with the wily old fox that is Klaas Jan-Huntelaar.

Fabinho also impressed during the away leg of this tie as he was responsible for a key clearance that allowed Liverpool to leave Amsterdam with three points.

With the Reds’ injury concerns, it looks like the Brazilian and the former Cameroon international are going to have to put in those performances for a little while yet.
