A Liverpool star has been praised after Sunday’s win.

The Reds treated the first Anfield crowd since March to a 4-0 win thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah, Gini Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and a Nelson Semedo own goal.

Salah opened the scoring after 24 minutes after he took advantage of a defensive lapse from Conor Coady, while Wijnaldum curled home a beautiful strike from outside the box.

Matip then thumped home a header following a well-worked corner routine and then Semdo made things safe when he attempted to scramble away a probing ball into the box but ended up doing Liverpool’s job for them.

A 4-0 win indicates that the whole side pulled in the same direction but there was a particularly good performance by Wijnaldum, the midfielder who looks set to leave Anfield on a free transfer in the summer.

He may only have six months left on his contract and can talk to foreign sides from January, but the Dutchman put in a characteristically stoic performance that gave no hint that Wijnaldum is about to entertain suitors from across the continent.

The Athletic journalist James Pearce was especially pleased with the nature of Wijnaldum’s 90 minutes as he called the 30-year-old a ‘machine’ and said his performance was ‘relentless’.

Gini chose a fine match to put in his best game of the season. 2,000 fans were welcomed to Anfield for the first time since before the restart and were keen to make their voices heard.

The man is often criticised for not doing enough in terms of goals or assists, but that’s often the result of ill-informed opinion. Winaldum does have the end product in his locker, as his form for the Netherlands shows, and he can unleash it when Klopp gives him the licence to roam forward.

Hopefully, there’ll be more of that to come from the Dutchman.
