Liverpool lineup vs Midtjylland: Billy The Kid leads the defence

This is the Liverpool lineup for their game against Midtjylland.

In his pre-match press conference, Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp said he would use this tie to get ‘fresh legs’ into the team and we could see heavy rotation for the clash.

The Reds have already qualified for the next round of the Champions League, while the Danish outfit has little to play for either. This means that Klopp can send out a team full of U18 players if he liked and he won’t risk upsetting the natural order of the group.

While the German is unlikely to take things that far, we could see a much younger Liverpool lineup than we’re used to watching in the Champions League.

Some of the manager’s thinking will be shaped by the injury list. Thiago, Alisson, Xherdan Shaqiri and James Milner are on the short-term butcher’s bill, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez will be out for the foreseeable.

This means that we’re likely to see some senior players take the field in Demark on Wednesday night, while Klopp could use the game to give Naby Keita a way back from injury and Divock Origi other last chance.

Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher played incredibly well during his pair of debuts that he made last week, but now Klopp has a problem to solve.

While this game can be viewed as a dead rubber, those fringe and youth players that are selected will be desperate to put their best foot forward and prove to Klopp what they can do. This extends to players like Origi and Keita.

Buuut that’s enough talking about the predicted Liverpool lineup for the game, let’s crack on with who we think will be in that starting side.

Goalkeeper: Caoimhin Kelleher

It’s almost tempting to say that Adrian will start this game, and maybe if Kelleher hadn’t played so well during his two appearances the Spaniard would be in – just to keep him fit and sharp.

But the 22-year-old has proven he’s above the Spaniard in the pecking order and leaving Kelleher out of the side would send the wrong signals right now. He starts, with Adrian watching and waiting for his last chance in a Liverpool top.

Left-back: Kostas Tsimikas

Andy Robertson is in dire need of a rest – not that you’d know looking at the Scot’s performance levels over the past few months.

Robbo seems like he’s a Duracell Bunny of a footballer, but even the fittest can be struck down with soft tissue injuries if their bodies aren’t looked after and that’s why Kostas Tsimikas needs to start.

Sightings of the Greek international have been rare, but this is another 90 minutes for him to get up to speed with the tactical demands of Klopp and put his foot forward for further involvement.
