Top five Liverpool players signed by Gerard Houllier
3. Dietmar Hamann
The German midfielder came to Liverpool in 1999 following a season at Newcastle under Kenny Dalglish. He instantly became a regular starter under Houllier and a key player for the club.
After helping the club to three trophies in 2001, Hamann won his second League Cup in 2003, providing the assist for the second goal in the final against Man United. The German also played an important role in Istanbul 2005 during which he came on as a second-half sub for Steve Finnan.
Despite suffering from a broken toe, Hamann put in a fine performance and scored in the penalty shootout as Liverpool became European Champions for the fifth time. He also converted from the spot in the shootout that determined the winner of the 2006 FA Cup Final. Liverpool went on to win thanks to some fine saves from Reina.
Hamann left Liverpool as a legend in 2006, playing 280 matches and scoring 11 goals, the most memorable one of which was a thunderous volley against Portsmouth during the 2003/04. It was adjudged the best goal of the Premier League that season by BBC.
