Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is astonishing.

The Dutchman suffered a catastrophic knee injury against Everton in the Merseyside derby and has been working towards a return to first-team football ever since.

This has left the club pretty short at the back, and manager Jurgen Klopp has had to turn towards inexperienced players like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams to plug gaps until first team replacements can be found.

Initial prognoses had Virgil van Dijk out of the Liverpool side for a whole entire season, but it appears as if the Dutchman is making astonishing progress and has posted a very promising video on his personal Twitter account.

In that video, we can see him doing some light ball work, on his own, and some gym exercises. It appears as if the knee is healing very nicely, although van Dijk is yet to get outside or join in with the rest of the team.

Former Toffie and Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell watched it and commented that the Dutchman looks in great shape, as Football Insider reported.

"“Seeing him coming back is massive now for the club and it’s great to see because you want the best players to be playing.“He looks well as well, so maybe that tear has given him a forced rest and now he’s getting back to full fitness and I’m sure everyone will want to see him back.”"

If anyone was going to come back strong and defy the odds to play again this season, it would be van Dijk. The former Southampton man is an absolute monster and is an incredibly fit human being.

That ACL injury is clearly horrific but he appears to be mending very well.  At 29, van Dijk could have been very concerned with his future as a professional footballer.

As people near 30, there is a physical decline and that could have resulted in a longer rehab period or the defender failing to reach the level that he was at before Jordan Pickford tore through his standing leg.

We still don’t know if van Dijk is going to be the same man on the field, but if his progress is anything to go by, he should be just fine.
