Divock Origi starts his slow goodbye
Liverpool forward Divock Origi has started his slow goodbye.
It’s been a really weird career from the Belgian, who has gone from starlet to nobody to legend back to a nobody in the space of four years.
Divock Origi was signed from Lille after he sparkled in the 2014 World Cup but failed to hit the ground running and spent a pretty fruitless time on loan with Wolfsburg.
Following the conclusion of that Bundesliga adventure, everyone thought the 25-year-old would be sold. But he rolled his socks up, knuckled down, and managed to carve a niche out for himself in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Supersub Origi, as his third Liverpool identity, was pretty promising. Massive goals were scored against Barcelona and against Everton and against Newcastle as the Belgian began to forge an identity as a game-changer from the bench.
But that all dissipated pretty quickly as soon as Origi was given a new five-year contract, which old stalwarts like Steve Nicol criticized at the time.
Origi has only played seven Premier League minutes this season and can’t get in the rotated sides like Takumi Minamino or Diogo Jota can. We’ve seen the Belgian more in Champions League games, but man cannot survive on Europe alone.
He’s since removed any reference to Liverpool from his Twitter page, and that’s a big deal in 2020. The man who wanted to fight for his Anfield career appears to be no longer fighting.
There are certain clubs in the Premier League who would take Origi. Wolves have been linked with his signature again, to name just one.
The man who was desperate to stay around Merseyside appears to have accepted his fate. By removing LFC from his Twitter bio, Origi seems to have started his slow goodbye.
Despite the negative years, that wonderful 12 months was so sweet that the Belgian could still leave as a legend.
