Liverpool must sign Diego Costa.
Atletico Madrid canceled the Spaniard’s contract earlier in the week, reported the BBC, and he’s now free to sign for any side he wants.
Before we go any further into this piece, let’s address the elephant in the room. On the field, Diego Costa has one of the worst reputations around. We hate him, most people hate him, and that’s kinda that point of him.
This is the type of man that wouldn’t have a queue of people lining up to wee on him if he was on fire, but when he’s on fire for you, you’d bend over backward and gift the Gods your first-born to keep him fit and in form.
Costa ruffled more feathers than goals he’s scored, which is a lot considering the man has181 professional goals in the bank. He’s best remembered for a prolific spell with Chelsea, which yielded 52 goals in 89 Premier League appearances. While Costa won’t find the goals come to him that easy ever again, he still has skills that could be useful to Jurgen Klopp.
Despite all the hate and the angry, bitter, twisted posturing from Costa and directed to Costa, Liverpool should consider signing the Spanish international.
Klopp has shown that he doesn’t really trust his back-up players when things aren’t going our way. Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi have been fairly ineffective, and have struggled to change games when they come on.
Origi might have experience winning the Premier League and the Champions League, but he’s not a winner, and he might not be part of the side for much longer. Costa is a winner. He’s the type of winner that would give away his Gran to the Devil in exchange for a victory and he’s exactly what Liverpool needs.
Klopp might not need a plan B or C, but sometimes we could do with a plan D. Well, plan Diego could bring some aggression to the squad, some desire, an extra jolt of electricity and the grit and determination that has characterized his career.
Costa might not score too many goals, but his impact could far outweigh any statistical gains.
