It had to be, didn’t it?

After the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries, it’s imperative that Liverpool act in both the January and the summer windows to recruit at least one new central defender.

Fabinho has impressed significantly during his stint but he is still the best defensive midfield option. Joel Matip has also been great this season when called upon but is susceptible to injury.

Special mentions also have to put out there for Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, with the latter looking like a ‘baby Van Dijk’ with his top-knot and playing style an echo of the Dutchman. He has really impressed and could be considered as a fourth choice option next season if he is not loaned out.

But reliance can not be put upon these four to be Liverpool’s central defensive options. Rumours have surrounded Aissa Mandi and Ozan Kabak recently in that area, but I think Klopp will go for cover in the January window with a more formidable option, be it Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahima Konate or Jannik Vestergaard, joining in the summer.

With Van Dijk and Gomez still a while away from recovery, this is Klopp’s main conundrum.
