Here are the five key moments of 2020 for Liverpool.

The ghastly pandemic engulfed communities and led to people around the world wishing away the dreadful year 2020. However, despite the turmoil, Liverpool fans have one, major and historic reason to cherish the year because of the title win. The asterisk is a reminder to the football world about what we achieved.

However, 2020 was not without its challenges – some internal and others external. At the height of the pandemic, the club decided to place some staff on the UK Government’s furlough scheme, only for the decision to be reversed after considerable criticism largely based on Liverpool being a club which was supposed to operate to a higher standard.

Equally, leaked reports of our alleged collaboration with the team across the East Lancashire Road on ‘Project Big Picture’, was difficult to digest let alone defend.

Liverpool and the other apparent members of the ‘Big Six’ do not own football in this country and need reminding that they have a duty of care to the wider welfare of the game at all levels. From Anfield to York Street, this is not the time to cut and run.

Externally we’ve been punished more severely by the excesses of VAR, which has ruined football as we know it. Fans are unable to instantly celebrate with long drawn out deliberations over armpits, fingers, and bent lines. The inconsistency of decisions has been breathtaking and cost Liverpool players and points. Only serious reform can now suffice.

Finally, to end the thirty-year streak without a packed Anfield has been painful. Liverpool needs its fans and its fans need Liverpool. Whilst the global Red family has been glued to their screens, the ability to pay homage to the Champions has been restricted because of the health risks.

All being well, that time will come but our supporter’s love, loyalty and energy is appreciated by the club and not even a pandemic can extinguish that.
