Avoiding the transfer window would be destructively arrogant

Liverpool must spend this transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp and his staff have had to negotiate a minefield of injuries in key positions and the ongoing battle to keep the team healthy from a COVID standpoint. They, for the most part, have done so masterfully, as their top o’ the table place in the face of unrivalled adversity speaks volumes to the job this club has done thus far.

The January transfer window opens soon and the Wijnaldum situation is slated to be sorted one way or the other. The need for a CB is clearly on fans minds, as they go through the list of available options and candidates the club could pursue. It is not yet clear how far Michael Edwards, Klopp, and co. will go to get centre-back coverage for the rehabbing CB duo of VVD and Joe Gomez.

Their reliance through the autumn on the youngster Rhys Williams, Nat Philips, and the enlistment of Fabs from his defensive midfield role have provided stopgap support to be sure; but to continue in this vein would prove disastrous to the Reds chances in the mind of this writer.

With the continued injury crisis for the likes of Joel Matip, this leaves Klopp and the Reds without a single first-team choice center half. Not one.

News on the wire this morning have the Reds recalling a young 19-year-old CB from Fleetwood Town.

Hopefully, this does not signal a reluctance to enter the market for first a choice center half. There has been some speculation among pundits and fans that the young Dutchman Sven Botman is being courted.

So sit back and strap in Reds fans, for a wild and woolly ride into spring, if the autumn was any indicator, the winter and early spring campaign should prove just as surreal and unpredictable on its face.
