Liverpool look set to profit from a £20m star’s Champions League move.

The Telegraph has reported that former Red Danny Ings wants to move from Southampton in search of elite football.

Since joining the Saints for £20 million from Liverpool in 2019, the ex-Burnley man has gone from strength to strength. His goal return of 40 in 81 games for the south coast side is excellent, and it’s marked him out as one of the Premier League’s leading strikers.

It’s no surprise that Southampton has tried to tie him down to a new contract. His current one expires in 2022, according to Transfermarkt, but it doesn’t appear as if Ings has any interest in renewing that deal.

If the Saints don’t want their prize asset to walk for free, they’ll have to sell him this summer. And because of a clause inserted in the deal to take Ings to St. Marys, Liverpool will be due a percentage of their income from the move.

Even if that’s just a few million, it’ll be able to help the club. If Ings move to a side who are established in the Champions League, you assume they’d be able to pay more than the £20m Southampton forked out.

Danny Ings ran out of luck at Liverpool

You can’t blame him for trying to make the most of his final years at elite level, especially as Ings nears his 30s. The forward was robbed of a Liverpool career by horrendous knee injuries, and now he’s finally showing signs of becoming the player he was tipped to be.

In football, you have to make hay while the sun shines. The sun has been shining of Ings for the last two seasons, but who can guarantee it’ll continue to do so as it sets on his career at the top.

Whatever happens next, he’ll always have a section of the Liverpool support backing him.
