Defensive midfield: Thiago – 5.5/10

The Spaniard has been tarnished by some ex-players in the media this week for ‘slowing the play down’  – notably by Dietmar Hamann (those in glass houses don’t throw stones, etc.)

And he didn’t, and doesn’t do this – but he was absolutely knackered by the time he was substituted after 75 minutes for Xherdan Shaqiri.

He’s needed for the Spurs game next week, and will be pivotal – just not in the number six role.

Central midfield: Gini Wijnaldum – 4/10

If it wasn’t for Rhys Williams’ mistakes, he would’ve been highlighted easily as Liverpool’s worst performer.

Playing passes that put players into trouble, losing the ball, and being negative in attacking situations – maybe it will be a blessing that Wijnaldum leaves if he continues performances like this.

Central midfield: James Milner – 5/10

It’s clear to see that truly it was in the midfield that Liverpool lost the game.

Despite a stunning piece of play involving him in Liverpool’s second goal, Milner performed as you’d expect for a man who has played very little football in recent months.

So after what seems like an age since Liverpool scored, they bagged two today in vain. How do the attackers rate after that?
