Liverpool fume over season-ruining moment vs Spurs
Liverpool fans are fuming over a season-changing event that went down against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
This was a massive game, and there was a lot riding on it. The result could have sparked a season-ending shift for the club, but as things stand Liverpool will use this and become energized from it.
However, one aspect that will cause serious concern is the apparent injury to Joel Matip. It’s certainly sent ripples through the fanbase, who expressed their concerns online.
Matip was excellent in the first half, but appeared to injure his right-hand side and was replaced by Nat Phillips at half time.
That meant any joy Liverpool fans took from seeing Roberto Firmino opened the scoring just before the break was swiftly tempered with the realization that Matip’s body has let him down again.
This really could be season-defining. Fabinho is out for a few weeks, probably, with his own worries and that means Jurgen Klopp is going to be forced into playing Phillips or Rhys Williams – who struggled against Manchester United in the FA Cup – with Jordan Henderson as center-backs.
When you put things into that context, it’s ridiculous to think that a club that’s won the Premier League and Champions League in consecutive seasons will be reduced to scraping the bottom of the barrel in such a way.
Phillips nearly joined Swansea City on deadline day, while Williams cut his teeth in non-league last season and would never have expected to be elevated to the first team with such speed.
Liverpool should never have relied on Joel Matip
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Klopp, FSG and the staff should have known that Matip would struggle with a large workload – and they must have planned for Matip to play a lot because they refused to sign a replacement for Dejan Lovren.
Now we could be witnessing our own season-ruining moment on one hand, while Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane give us hope with the other.
