Defensive midfield: Gini Wijnaldum – 7

After a dodgy first half, Wijnaldum developed and grew into the game more positively to become impactful on a wonderful performance.

When he picks up the ball in deeper areas and drives, instead of taking five or six needless touches, he is a genuine threat from deep in chance creation.

Definitely more suited to a six than an eight alongside Thiago.

Central midfield: Thiago Alcantara – 6.5

Bandaged like prime Martin Skrtel, Thiago showed us the rougher side of his sexy Spanish style with an energetic pressing performance.

Despite getting booked early (someone please tell him to stay on his feet), his passing, classiness and general play was top quality. Luckily the head injury he suffered to receive the bandage

Central midfield: James Milner – 8

Vintage Liverpool, vintage Milner. A really positive thinking, energetic performance from the 35 year-old who really controlled the midfield like he was ten years his own junior.

His passing, which characteristically is quite mundane, was creative and emulative of his Spanish partner. Milnercantara anyone?

Definitely the star of the midfield and one of the stars on the night.
