Liverpool have unearthed the next Andy Robertson
Liverpool has unearthed the next Andy Robertson as they’ve ended the January transfer window on a high.
Sporting director Michael Edwards has always had an eye for a bargain. This time last year he sniffed out Takumi Minamino’s release clause and acted quickly to bring the Japanese international to Anfield.
Before that, he moved quickly to secure the deal for Xherdan Shaqiri before another club triggered his relegation release clause after Stoke were relegated.
Gini Wijnaldum and Andy Robertson were also brought in from relegated teams. To Edwards and his data crunchers, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, it only matters where you’re going. They scout based on pure merit.
Could they have pulled the same trick again? The signing of Ozan Kabak has been greeted with some surprise by certain people, given that Kabak is a centre-back that was the foundation of the worse defence in the Bundesliga.
Schalke are in freefall and have conceded 49 goals from just 19 games, but that doesn’t mean Kabak is the root of the issue. Playing for S04 could be the symptom and the cause of his demise this season.
Liverpool have found the next Andy Robertson
Don’t forget, he’s only 20-years-old and had performed well at each step he’s taken over the course of his short career. Kabak was relegated with Stuttgart during his first season in Germany, but was still wanted by massive sides like Bayern Munich – said James Pearce on The Red Agenda podcast.
"Pearce added: “The feeling of Liverpool and scouting staff, is that, yes his performances have fluctuated but that’s been a product of his environment rather than inadequacies in his own game.”"
Robertson was part of a defense that conceded 80 goals during their relegation campaign, a defense that also included Manchester United star Harry Maguire.
Robbo, too, was given mixed scouting reports and was part of a terrible back four. But Liverpool were brave, they did their due diligence and got the deal over the line. He’s not the best left-back in the world.
Bringing defenders in, especially young ones, is never an exact science. But the signs are good. Could Liverpool have unearthed their next Robbo?
