Liverpool player ratings vs Leipzig: Kabak solid, Jones indomitable
Defensive midfield: Gini Wijnaldum – 7
A much more controlled game for Gini. He was composed on the ball and didn’t take too to pass it as well. This is something which he has been criticised for in recent games.
The Dutchman finally looked to be more comfortable in the role of a holding midfielder last night. He will have to remain there until Fabinho is back from injury so that Henderson can go back into midfield.
Central midfield: Thiago – 8
After his worst game in a Liverpool shirt against Leicester City, Thiago recovered well and played a massive role in last night’s win in Budapest. He got into positions from where he could dictate the play.
The Spaniard has been criticised for slowing down Liverpool’s play, but there were no signs of that vs Leipzig. His rash challenges in recent games have also come under scrutiny, but that too disappeared last night.
Central midfield: Curtis Jones– 9
Man of the match by a long way last night. His composure on the ball leaves me shocked every single game, and his swagger while holding on to the ball in tricky situations is jaw-dropping.
We saw a lot of that last night from Curtis, who is establishing himself as an integral part of Jurgen’s set-up for the near and distant future. The 20-year-old is key to Liverpool’s transitions, from attack to defence and vice versa.
