Liverpool need more from Georginio Wijnaldum

Gini Wijnaldum was one of the few players who didn’t show up well in this game. It was hard to notice him on the pitch, even though WhoScored.com credited him with completing all 54 of his pass attempts. It’s telling that none of those passes were tracked as crosses, through balls, long balls, or key passes.

The Dutch midfielder was simply a passenger in this game, and that’s not nearly good enough. Liverpool dominated the match despite not having one of their star midfielders playing at his best, and the Reds are going to need to make a change or get more out of Wijnaldum against Crystal Palace over the weekend.

It’s been frustrating to see such a high-quality person and player falter this season, because you can’t help but root for Wijnaldum. You want him to succeed. And he even wore the armband at Turf Moor.

But Wijnaldum isn’t meeting the standards he sets for himself or that Liverpool expect from an experienced starter. Hopefully, he can have a bounce-back performance this weekend against Crystal Palace if he starts again. However, performances like this are a reminder of why Kopites are ready to see the club move on from Wijnaldum, despite all the effort and quality he has given the Reds over the years.
