Liverpool Transfers: 3 benefits to signing Ibrahima Konate
Ibrahima Konate is a worthy investment for Liverpool
Ozan Kabak would be cheaper than Ibrahima Konate, because the option to buy on his contract of about 18 million pounds is nearly half the price Liverpool could have to pay to RB Leipzig to acquire Konate.
But at the end of the day, both players are affordable. The Reds probably cannot sign both, not just because of the economic implications, but because it’s hard to find the space to play two ascending young center backs.
Kabak has a great future ahead of him. He is a good one-on-one defender with passing and scoring upside who models his game after Virgil van Dijk. But Liverpool already have VVD. They don’t have a player like Konate.
The 21-year-old French central defender is a true defensive presence who reads the game intelligently and is a great team player. He could be a real asset to the Reds in a backup role to start with.
At the end of the day, Liverpool can’t go wrong with either Kabak or Konate. It seems like Jurgen Klopp and the Reds favor the Leipzig man, which makes sense. As great as Kabak was in the first half of 2019-2020, Konate’s 2018-2019 was truly special. And maybe that’s what Klopp is thinking of with signing Konate.
There is some risk here due to injury, but I still think Konate is a good investment when you look at what a top center back is going to go for in a few years. The economy should recover, and defenders of Konate’s expected caliber will be all the rage. It is good for Liverpool to keep an eye on the future at the position in this manner.
